On Tuesday the trading session opening was marked with the dollar ...

On Tuesday the trading session opening was marked with the dollar trading. Thus, Greek aid optimism influenced the market for a short time.? In the European trading session American currency narrowed its losses and ended the day strengthening against European opponents and remained neutral against the yen. It is obvious that investors have already taken into account the decision of European Union according to rumors, and their attention was switched to the U.S. fiscal cliff, which brought a lot of fear now.? The dollar was also supported by the US economic statistics published yesterday , most of which demonstrates positive dynamics. Total volume of durable orders is the same in October in comparison with September, it was better-than-expected by forecast, which expected its decrease by 1.2%? m/m, the consumer confidence rose in November ? the Conference Board Consumer confidence index showed? 73.7 after 73.1 in October, when it was expected only 73.0. Housing market statistics also confirms the housing market recovery ? according to the Federal Housing Finance Agency (the FHFC) house prices rose by 0.2% m/m and by 4.4% y/y, and S&P Case-Shiller report demonstrates rise in house prices in 20 megalopolises in the same month by 3% y/y. Regional data has some divergences? ? the production index conducted by the FRS Richmond in November increased to 9 from 7 earlier, the production index of the FRS Chicago decreased in October by 1.2% m/m, but increased by 5.9% per annum. Today there is only a few news. Housing market data for October will come out, which may demonstrate its decrease by 1.0% after increase +5.7% in the previous month.? The FRS Economic data of the regions (the Beige Book) will pe published soon, which? will bring information about the situation in the region. If talking about the nearest perspectives, we can assume that the dollar will be interesting only as a shelter-currency, and the invetors? attention will be drawn mostly by news about the negotiations of the US government about the budget problems.

EUR

On the last trading session investors concentrated their attention on the euro for a short time which was caused by the information about the new aid tranche for Greece. On Tuesday the Ministers of Finance of the EU, the ECB and the IMF came to a consensus about the new aid tranche for Greece and allocated 43.7 milliard euros to this country from the EFSF. What is more, it was announced that there is an intention to consider different measures in order to support Greece such as lower interest rate of Greece?s debt, reduce credit interest rates which had been provided by the EFSF, and also 10 years postponement of credit provided by the European Financial Stability Facility. Nevertheless, It didn?t bring risk seeking in the market, maybe because of the fear of budget problems in the USA, which is the most important problem now as it must be solved till by the end of current year. There was almost no news about the EU economy. Only France Consumer Confidence Index for November was published, which showed better results than expected. The Consumer Confidence Index remained unchanged, at the level 84 as in October when it was forecasted its decrease to? 83. Today there are more news ? the money supply data is going to come out , the aggregate M3 is expected to widen to +2.8% y/y in October from+2.7% y/y earlier, but it might slow down to +2.8%? per quarter after +3.0% q/q in the previous period. Germany inflation rate is also expected to come out? ? according to the preliminary calculations the Consumer price index (CPI) for November is expected to decrease? -0.1% m/m, +1.9% y/y against 0.0% m/m, +2.0% y/y in October. It is unlikely that this statistics will cause activity in the market. Members of market will pay attention to the political events in the USA.

GBP

The British pound was changing its positions against the dollar, but it ended the day decreasing as the euro. The pound sterling was supported by the GDP growth data for the 3rd quarter which demonstrates more precise results. According to the report the main economic indicators remained +1% q/q, but it decreased by 0.1% y/y, at the same time household expenses in Great Britain for the 3rd quarter demonstrated the highest growth for more than two years? ? by 0.6% after its decrease by 0.2% before, and gross profit increased by 0.5% and? 1.0% correspondingly. Maybe it reduced slightly fears of the results for the last quarter of this year. What is more, yesterday at the meeting of Parliament the head of the BoE announced? that he will be surprised if the economy demonstrates bad results for the 4th quarter. The pound was negatively influenced by the announcement of the governor of the Bank of England P. Fisher about British economy that may need additional stimulus next year. Moreover, interest in pound could be reduced by fear of the US budget problems and good data of the US economy. Today there will be no news about ?islands? economy, and the pound will remain under the influence of external information.

JPY

Yesterday in the trading session Japanese currency decreased slightly against the dollar and ended the trading day almost on the starting prices. The currency pairs demonstrated weak dynamics in narrow corridors, maybe because of subsided political announcements about aggressive quantitative easing and coming elections in the Land of the Rising Sun, fixed on the middle of December. It intensified uncertainty and forced the market to wait for new reference points. Today there was no news about Japanese economy . This week the main information will come out tomorrow. And for the present the currency pairs which involve the yen may produce profits. It may support the Japanese currency in today?s trading session.

Alcoholic fly larvae need fix for learning

Friday, November 30, 2012

Fly larvae fed on alcohol-spiked food for a period of days grow dependent on those spirits for learning. The findings, reported in Current Biology, a Cell Press publication, on November 29th, show how overuse of alcohol can produce lasting changes in the brain, even after alcohol abuse stops.

The report also provides evidence that the very human experience of alcoholism can be explored in part with studies conducted in fruit flies and other animals, the researchers say.

"Our evidence supports the long-ago proposed idea that functional ethanol tolerance is produced by adaptations that counter the effects of ethanol, and that these adaptations help the nervous system function more normally when ethanol is present," says Brooks Robinson of The University of Texas at Austin. "However, when ethanol is withheld, the adaptations persist to give the nervous system abnormal properties that manifest themselves as symptoms of withdrawal."

Robinson and his colleagues found that alcohol consumption, at a level equivalent to mild intoxication in humans, at first impeded learning by fly larvae. More specifically, those larvae had some trouble in associating an unpleasant heat pulse with an otherwise attractive odor in comparison to larvae that had not been drinking alcohol.

After a six-day drinking binge, however, those larvae adapted and could learn as well as normal larvae could. In fact, the alcohol-adapted animals learned poorly when their ethanol was taken away from them. And, when given alcohol back, their learning deficit was erased.

Robinson says that the findings are the first proof of cognitive ethanol dependence in an invertebrate, suggesting that some of ethanol's ability to change behavior must begin at the cellular level. After all, flies and humans share many of the same features at the level of individual neurons, and not so much in terms of the way those neurons are put together into working circuits.

The study also shows that the "responses to ethanol that addict and plague us" have a very long evolutionary history, Robinson says. And that means that genetic analysis in flies might yield some very important answers.

NASA says enough ice on Mercury to encase Washington, DC

New evidence suggests Mercury's north polar region contains large deposits of ice (NASA/Johns Hopkins Universi??NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft has discovered evidence that the planet Mercury has enough ice on its surface that it could encase Washington, DC in a block two and a half miles deep.

"For more than 20 years the jury has been deliberating on whether the planet closest to the Sun hosts abundant water ice in its permanently shadowed polar regions," writes Sean Solomon of the Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, principal investigator of the MESSENGER mission. "MESSENGER has now supplied a unanimous affirmative verdict."

"These reflectance anomalies are concentrated on poleward-facing slopes and are spatially collocated with areas of high radar backscatter postulated to be the result of near-surface water ice," Gregory Neumann of the NASA Goddard Flight Center writes in the paper. "Correlation of observed reflectance with modeled temperatures indicates that the optically bright regions are consistent with surface water ice."

The study results were published Wednesday in Science magazine, which explains in its summary, "The buried layer must be nearly pure water ice. The upper layer contains less than 25 wt.% water-equivalent hydrogen. The total mass of water at Mercury's poles is inferred to be 2 ? 1016 to 1018 g and is consistent with delivery by comets or volatile-rich asteroids."

Radar imaging of Mercury has long suggested that there could be large deposits on the planet's surface, with reports dating back to 1991. But today's report presents harder evidence backing up that theory.

MESSENGER has fired more than 10 million laser imaging pulses at Mercury's surface since arriving in orbit in 2011. Feedback from those pulses have helped NASA in its quest to verify whether ice is present in Mercury's poles, which are largely shielded from exposure to the sun's rays.

Real Estate Scams Targeting the Upstate | WSPA

A warning from the FBI, are you looking to rent an apartment or home be careful, because scammers are taking your money and leaving you out in the cold.

The FBI tells us scam artists are using websites like Craigslist to post apartment and home rentals.

The problem is you send the deposit and the key never comes.

Real Estate Agent, for Red Door Realty, Erin Lausch was shocked to find out someone was re-posting her rental ads on Craigslist.

The ads were copied and pasted word for word, and even show cased her pictures..

There was a glaring difference, the price was cut in half and Lausch's name and number were removed.

"Someone will get really excited that it's this great house and its only 500 dollars a month," Lausch said.

That excitement will quickly fade if you fall for one these too good to be true deals. Here's how this scam works, you come across the ad on Craigslist, when you contact the person that placed the ad, you will most likely get an email reply similar to this...

"The person says that they own the house and they live in Africa and they are doing mission work and they really want someone to take care of the house so you send me the deposit and ill send you the key," Lausch said.

We asked what you need to look out for, so you don't end up out in the cold and down thousands of dollars.

"If there's no local phone number for you to call for you to speak to someone, if they want you to give them your number and they'll call you that's a red flag , if you cant see the house before you put a deposit down and you can only drive by," Lausch said.?

Lausch says if you come across a house for sale or for rent the best thing you can do is meet the seller in person.?

"My recommendation would be to never rent a place without seeing it," Lausch said.

It's the only fail proof way to know you're not being fooled by someone halfway across the globe.

If you are the victim of a scam you can report it to the FBI by Clicking Here.

Flowing lithium atoms form accidental transistor

Transistors are at the heart of the electronic circuits that make modern computers possible. Now a transistor that controls the flow of atoms, rather than electrons, could be used as a model to probe the mysterious electrical property of superconductivity.

"We can test concepts for quantum electronics," says Tilman Esslinger at the Institute for Quantum Electronics in Zurich, Switzerland, who has created the transistor-like object from flowing atoms and light.

Thanks to quantum-mechanical effects, below a certain critical temperature some materials become superconducting: electrons flow through them unhindered by the usual electrical resistance. Because of this, superconductors potentially have many novel applications, such as energy-efficient data centres. But how best to design them for such applications is not known.

One way to gain a better understanding is to build a model using an analogous process called superfluidity. Rather like electrons flowing without electrical resistance, at temperatures close to absolute zero, some atoms turn superfluid, flowing with no friction or physical resistance.

Cigar channel

Esslinger and his colleagues wondered if they could observe the transition from non-superfluid to superfluid, and use this as a model for studying the onset of superconductivity. In doing so, they inadvertently created a device that was the atomic equivalent of a transistor.

Electrical transistors consist of a source and a drain, connected by a semiconducting channel. A voltage applied via a gate sitting above the channel changes the channel's resistance, either impeding or allowing current to flow. Without meaning to, Esslinger's team created what amounts to an atomic analogue of this using optical trapping, in which criss-crossing laser beams are used to corral ultracold atoms.

By strategically placing laser beams between a source of gaseous lithium atoms cooled to just 500 nano-degrees above absolute zero, and a reservoir that they could drain into, they created a cigar-shaped channel between the two. Made entirely of light, the channel was 200 micrometres long and 20 wide at its widest point.

Atomic current

As a superfluid, atoms could flow down this channel, from the source to the drain. But the researchers were able to switch the flow off using several more lasers. One was shone at the centre of the cigar, the equivalent of physically pinching the flow of atoms. A second laser, the gate beam, then controlled how tightly this first laser pinched, effectively closing the channel.

When closed, the ultracold lithium gas built up and lost its superfluid properties ? but when the channel was opened again, the lithium rapidly recovered superfluid, resistance-free flow. This atomic "current" resembled the switchable electric current in a conventional transistor.

The device is unlikely to show up in a computer anytime soon. Instead, the team hopes to use their transistor-like system to simulate superconducting devices of the future. As atoms are much larger than electrons, they are much easier to observe.

What Will NASA Do With Its Gifted Spy 'Scopes?

Because there is a requirement to maintain a certain amount of capability (so if a spy satellite fails, they need to have a spare to launch to replace it in short order), and the long lead times (say 5 to 10 years) to build these satellites, the DoD orders a number of satellites, and some of them may possibly never actually end up being flight vehicles.

These two satellite 'cores' are just such spares. They weren't launched because a new generation of spy satellites were put into operation before these were needed. There are probably no other examples of these things still in orbit, though the model was probably used for a decade or more.

Remember, NASA wasn't given two completed satellites, they were given two mirror assembly's and the associated bus and structure. It is up to NASA to design and build a useful science satellite with them.

As to the DoD having something better, they probably do, but it isn't the mirror that is better, it's that the bus and structure will be of a different design. Optically, the limitation on a downward looking spy satellite will be the atmosphere, not the mirror or other associated optical components.
