Quantum microphone captures extremely weak sound
ScienceDaily (Feb. 27, 2012) ? Scientists from Chalmers University of Technology have demonstrated a new kind of detector for sound at the level of quietness of quantum mechanics. The result offers prospects of a new class of quantum hybrid circuits that mix acoustic elements with electrical ones, and may help illuminate new phenomena of quantum physics.
The results have been published in Nature Physics.
The "quantum microphone" is based on a single electron transistor, that is, a transistor where the current passes one electron at a time. The acoustic waves studied by the research team propagate over the surface of a crystalline microchip, and resemble the ripples formed on a pond when a pebble is thrown into it. The wavelength of the sound is a mere 3 micrometers, but the detector is even smaller, and capable of rapidly sensing the acoustic waves as they pass by.
On the chip surface, the researchers have fabricated a three-millimeter-long echo chamber, and even though the speed of sound on the crystal is ten times higher than in air, the detector shows how sound pulses reflect back and forth between the walls of the chamber, thereby verifying the acoustic nature of the wave.
The detector is sensitive to waves with peak heights of a few percent of a proton diameter, levels so quiet that sound can be governed by quantum law rather than classical mechanics, much in the same way as light.
"The experiment is done on classical acoustic waves, but it shows that we have everything in place to begin studies of proper quantum-acoustics, and nobody has attempted that before," says Martin Gustafsson, PhD student and first author of the article.
Apart from the extreme quietness, the pitch of the waves is too high for us to hear: The frequency of almost 1 gigahertz is 21 octaves above one-lined A. The new detector is the most sensitive in the world for such high-frequency sound.

VA governor dropped bill over legal concerns
WASHINGTON (AP) ? Virginia Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell says he backed away from a bill requiring women to undergo an invasive procedure before receiving an abortion because he believed it might not have withstood legal scrutiny.
McDonnell discussed the matter Friday at a panel hosted by Politico. It was his first extensive comments since asking lawmakers to amend a bill that would have required women seeking abortions to submit to a vaginal ultrasound. The bill drew sharp opposition from Democrats and women's groups.
McDonnell said he consulted with doctors and lawyers including the state's attorney general before concluding the bill would likely face constitutional challenges. The bill was changed to require noninvasive ultrasounds.
McDonnell has been mentioned as a possible vice presidential candidate in 2012 and potential future presidential contender.

Objective: The fragile sites and fragile-site-related genes play animportant role in the process of tumorigenesis and malignanttransformation in human malignancies(including digestive tract cancers).Two candidate tumor suppressor genes, fragile histidine triad(FHIT) andWW domain-containing oxidoreductase (WWOX), have been found tospan the FRA3B and FRA16D, respectively, but FRA3B and FRA16Dare the most frequently expressed of the common chromosomal fragilesite loci. It is reported that the expression of WWOX and FHITgenes is decreased coordinately in several cancers, but it remainsuncertain in colorectal cancer. The purpose of this study is to investigatethe expression of WWOX and FHIT in colorectal cancer, to explorerelationship between WWOX and FHIT expression and clinicalpathologic parameters, and to investigate the coordination of WWOX andFHIT expression in colorectal cancer.Methods: Expression of WWOX and FHIT is evaluated byimmunohistochemical staining (two-step method) in 75 colorectal carcinoma specimens and 30 cases normal colorectal tissues, and theircorrelation with clinicopathological features was analyzed. Cox modelhas been used to calculate the survival.Results: The rate of WWOX and FHIT positive expression intumors is observed in 52% and 54.7% of specimens, respectively, whichis significantly different from that in normal colorectal tissues as 93.3%and 97.8%. WWOX and FHIT expression is correlated strongly(P?0.05).Expression of WWOX and FHIT is closely associated with histologicalgrade and Duke? stage. By Cox?s proportional hazard model analysis,histological grade and Duke stage and expression of WWOX areconsidered an independent predictor for the prognosis of the colorectalcancer. The follow-up data of 72 cases showed that 5-year survival group,27 of 40 are of the positive WWOX expression carcinomas, 30 of 40 areof the positive FHIT expression carcinomas, while in the 5-year deadgroup, 11 of 32 of are of the positive WWOX expression carcinomas, 10of 32 are of the positive FHIT expression carcinomas, and there is asignificant difference (p?0.05).Conclusion: The expression of WWOX and FHIT is lower incolorectal cancer than that in normal tissues. There is closely associatedwith histological grade, Dukes stage, and 5-year survival rate (P?0.05).Expression of WWOX and FHIT was correlated strongly (P?0.05). Thiscorrelation is consistent with the susceptibility of common fragile sites to DNA damage. It is suggested that WWOX and FHIT genes may play animportant role in the initiation and development of colorectal cancer.They can become targets of predicting the progression of colorectalcancer.

Oil prices soar as Iran cuts off supply

Oil?prices?jumped to a nine-month high above $105 a barrel on Monday after Iran said it halted crude exports to Britain and France in an escalation of a dispute over the Middle Eastern country's nuclear program.

Earlier in the day, it rose to $105.21, the highest since May. The contract rose 93 cents to settle at $103.24 per barrel in New York on Friday.

Iran's?oil?ministry said Sunday it stopped crude shipments to British and French companies in an apparent pre-emptive blow against the European Union after the bloc imposed sanctions on Iran's crucial fuel exports. They include a freeze of the country's central bank assets and an?oil?embargo set to begin in July.
Iran's?Oil?Minister Rostam Qassemi had warned earlier this month that Tehran could cut off?oil?exports to "hostile" European nations. The 27-nation EU accounts for about 18 percent of Iran's?oil?exports.
The EU sanctions, along with other punitive measures imposed by the U.S., are part of Western efforts to derail Iran's disputed nuclear program, which the West fears is aimed at developing atomic weapons. Iran denies the charges, and says its program is for peaceful purposes.
Analysts said Iran's announcement would likely have minimal impact on supplies, because only about 3 percent of France's?oil?consumption is from Iranian sources, while Britain had not imported?oil?from the Islamic republic in six months.
"The?price?rise is more a reflection of concerns about the further escalation in tensions between Iran and the West," said commodity analyst Caroline Bain of the Economist Intelligence Unit. "Banning the tiny quantities of exports to the U.K. and France involves very little risk for Iran ? indeed quite the opposite, it catches the headlines and leads to a higher global?oil?price, which is something Iran is very keen to encourage."

Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies) essentially told Rick (Andrew Lincoln) to kill Shane (Jon Bernthal) in the closing scene. Has she turned evil in a way?
Mazzara: Yes and no. People are very interested in seeing us develop the characters. What's interesting is when you consider that scene, that character is now developing in a way that is going to surprise everybody, and, to me, that scene is pretty clear-cut. We know that Lori makes foolish decisions. We saw her attempt to take morning-after pills as a birth control method. That's clearly not plausible, but she doesn't know that. So, she is a woman who does exercise poor judgment.
So, when she drives off now, she's trapped, and we see that she is actually surprisingly adept in this world, that she can single-handedly kill two zombies with her bare hands. Shane's going out to save her, but she doesn't need to be saved. Yet it's Shane's speech to her saying, "You know what we had was real, that you're trying to rewrite history because you're trying to sanitize the truth," that strikes a chord with her because Shane is right. That frightens her and threatens her and it leads her to that whisper in Rick's ear, ? la Lady Macbeth. It's very interesting because she is clearly playing one man against the other, and she favors things in both men. She would think the ultimate man for her would be a combination of the two.
How will this affect Rick, knowing that his wife basically told him to kill his best friend?
Mazzara: It will be played out in the next episode. The next episode is an episode that really puts Shane and Rick at odds, and Rick is tired of secrets, and a lot will come spilling out.

With news that Jon Bernthal is in talks for Frank Darabont's new TNT pilot, it seems that Shane's impending demise is the worst kept secret of this year. What would you say to fans who feel cheated by the news possibly being out there already?
Mazzara: Let's say this: You know the Shane character was killed off in the comic book very, very early. We are a show that is going to surprise people. People can speculate. I haven't read the Frank script, but it is conceivable that Bernthal's character gets offed in that pilot. I haven't read it. So I don't want to say anything about secrets or spoilers or anything like that, but I think fans will be satisfied with our story, and I'm just going to focus on that, not other material.
Shane didn't take too kindly to Hershel (Scott Wilson), telling him to keep his mouth shut. How will Shane fight back?
Mazzara: It never goes well when you confront Shane head-on. He's a hothead. We took Shane back a little bit in the aftermath of the barn massacre and he has that tender moment with Carol (Melissa McBride) where he's washing her hands. Now he's back. Now he's heating up again. Shane is back in his manic angry state that he was before he smashed open the barn. So for Hershel to engage him while he's in that state, I'm sure, could be problematic.
Turning to Carol and Daryl (Norman Reedus), their conversation really spurred him to finally join the group again. Will he begin to realize his worth now?
Mazzara: I think he does. Let's not forget that Episodes 8 and 9 took place within a day of the Barn-mageddon, as we call it. Daryl is rocked by that. He wanted to be Carol's knight in shining armor and take up this quest and be the one to find that girl. He now questions his self-worth. Was he a fool to ever take on that quest? This brings up issues of his upbringing. He actually is going to hit Carol and pulls back his fist because that is his learned behavior and her learned behavior is to take it. Her generous spirit is willing to take that because she cares about him so deeply.?
They're both so freaked out that they're in that odd emotional space that he withdraws, but he realizes how much she means to him and how much the group means to him, so he connects. He connects in a way that surprises her. He fits into the group in the last three episodes of the season in an actually very surprising way; I'd even say more violent way, and I think that he finds himself with a new role in the group. Carol has difficulties with the idea that for him to reintegrate into the group, he, in a sense, changes who he is, and she's starts to feel a rift.

Carl (Chandler Riggs) has been losing himself over the course of the last two seasons. The prospect of Lori's baby seemed to bring out his adolescent side again. Will that continue?
Mazzara: In some of the future episodes, Carl does stuff that is surprisingly boyish and childish, and that stuff plays in a very special way in this particular world. When you see particular scenes that Carl's in, it's interesting to see him acting like a little boy. We've forgotten that he's a boy. He is losing his innocence, and it'll be interesting when we cut the other way in surprising ways.
Have we seen the last of Tony and Dave's group?
Mazzara: Well, [the farm group] got that guy. They've got that guy Randall (Michael Zegen).
But will the other group try to get Randall back?
Mazzara: That's the whole thing. This group is terrified that those guys are coming for them.

BEIRUT (AP) ? Gunmen in Syria staged a guerrilla-style ambush that killed a senior state prosecutor and a judge Sunday in an attack that suggested armed factions are growing bolder and more coordinated in their uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime.
The roadway slayings ? reported in an opposition-dominated northern region by the Syrian state news agency ? came a day after a deadly hit-and-run attack on a political figure in the heart of the pro-Assad city of Aleppo.
The targeted killings have not reached Assad's inner circle, but they indicate a growing shift toward violent tactics by the opposition as it brings aboard more military defectors and seeks to tighten control over the small pieces of territory in its hands.
The fears of a looming civil war have neighboring Jordan racing to finish a refugee camp near the Syrian border to handle a possible exodus of people fleeing for safety.
Meanwhile, Egypt became the latest Arab nation to publicly snub Assad by ordering the withdrawal of its ambassador in Damascus.
The Syrian government has offered some concessions, including proposing a referendum next week that could allow more political voices to challenge Assad's Baath Party. But the opposition demands nothing short of Assad's resignation. And the regime has not eased off its attacks on the opposition forces, which it describes as "terrorists" carrying out a foreign conspiracy to destabilize the country.
In Homs in central Syria, government forces sent in reinforcements as they shelled the rebel-held Baba Amr district that has been under near constant barrage for nearly two weeks, said the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The group said at least 14 people were killed Sunday across Syria, half of them by government troops.
"I'm worried that Syria is going to slide into a civil war," British Foreign Secretary William Hague told the BBC on Sunday.
The U.N. last gave a death toll for the conflict in January, saying 5,400 people had been killed in 2011 alone. But hundreds more have been killed since, according to activist groups. An opposition group, Local Coordination Committees, says more than 7,300 have been killed since the uprising began more than 11 months ago.
There is no way to independently verify the numbers, since Syria bans almost all foreign journalists and human rights organizations.
The latest assassinations came on a road in the northwest province of Idlib, which has become a patchwork of areas held either by the government or mutinous soldiers who have safe-haven bases in nearby Turkey.
The state news agency SANA said gunmen opened fire on a car carrying Idlib provincial state prosecutor Nidal Ghazal and Judge Mohammed Ziadeh, who were killed instantly. The driver also was fatally wounded.
Idlib has witnessed intense clashes between troops loyal to Assad and army defectors who attack and then melt into the rugged mountains. In June, the town of Jisr al-Shugour became the first area to fall into the hands of rebels, who were accused by the government of killing scores of people and setting government buildings on fire. Syrian troops loyal to Assad retook the area shortly afterward.
On Saturday, SANA said gunmen shot to death Jamal al-Bish, a member of the city council of the nearby northern city of Aleppo. The city has been a center of support for Assad since the uprising began.
The back-to-back slayings follow the Feb. 11 killing of a Syrian army general in the first assassination to take place in the capital city of Damascus. Brig. Gen. Issa al-Khouli, a doctor and the chief of a military hospital in the capital, was shot as he left his home. Last month, the head of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent branch in Idlib was shot to death while on his way to Damascus.
In Cairo, Egyptian state news agency MENA said Foreign Minister Mohammed Amr decided to withdraw the country's ambassador to Syria. The report gave no reason for the decision, but Arab governments have been pulling back diplomatic backing for Assad in protest against his refusal to back regional peace efforts.
Earlier this month, the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council, led by powerful Saudi Arabia, said it would withdraw its ambassadors and expel Syrian envoys from the oil-rich region. Tunisia also has pulled its ambassador from Damascus.
In Damascus, a funeral was held for a man killed a day earlier when Syrian security forces fired bullets and tear gas at thousands of people marching in a funeral procession that turned into one of the largest protests in the capital.
The Local Coordination Committees said security forces pressured the parents of the victim, Samer al-Khatib, to bury him early so that his funeral would not turn into an anti-government protest.
Activist groups called for a one-day strike in Damascus to express support for other cities in revolt. But there was little response. Residents in the capital told The Associated Press that businesses were open as usual on the first day of the work week. School and universities also were operating.
Calls for strikes in the past did not succeed in tightly controlled Damascus, where government forces and informers keep a close eye on all activities. The capital has been mostly quiet since the uprising began.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama says the painful restructuring of America's manufacturing base means a lot of jobs are gone forever, but that does not mean Americans must "settle for a lesser future."
In his weekly radio and Internet address Saturday, Obama said American manufacturers are reinventing themselves with new technology and new efficiencies that have helped lead to what the administration claims are 3.7 million new jobs created over the past two years.
"Factories where people thought they'd retire have left town. Jobs that provided a decent living have been shipped overseas" and will not return, Obama said. "But that doesn't mean we have to settle for a lesser future."
He recorded the address while visiting a massive Boeing Co. manufacturing plant near Seattle on Friday. He toured a modern factory floor and the inside of one of the aircraft maker's new flagship Dreamliner passenger jets.
"Companies like Boeing are realizing that even when we can't make things cheaper than China, we can make things better," Obama said in the weekly address. "That's how we're going to compete globally."
Delivering the Republican address, Washington Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers accused Obama of overspending that will set the country up for a financial implosion like the one in Greece.
"Instead of leading the effort to bring down our debt and make tough choices, the president is proposing that we spend more and more," she said.
While at Boeing on Friday, Obama announced steps to offer financing to U.S. companies to match help their foreign competitors get, with the goal of helping American industries compete.
Obama called on Congress to extend the Export-Import Bank's authorization. White House officials said the bank will reach its lending limit at the end of March and Obama pointed to it as a key player in helping promote U.S. exports.
At the same time, the White House announced that Boeing will participate in an Export-Import Bank program that helps companies advance money to suppliers on export-related contracts. Administration officials said Boeing would be committing to more than $700 million in short-term credit this year. Officials said the arrangement would help Boeing compete for foreign clients against European jet maker Airbus.
Facing re-election, Obama has pointed to a decline in unemployment and trumpeted a recent boost in manufacturing jobs as an indicator of an economy on the mend. Republicans seeking the White House have accused Obama of failing to steer the economy out of a deep recession.

"I did not have a Valentine's date this year," Kate Upton, 19, responded. Ellen was unfazed by that seemingly implausible, evasive response, continuing:
"OK, so he was busy ... So how does your boyfriend Mark Sanchez feel about all this whole Sports Illustrated cover thing? He must be proud, right?"
"Well, even if I had a boyfriend. I wouldn't ask how he felt about it," Kate said, persistently dodging Ellen's questions. But again, it didn't end there.
"He would just tell you though, right? Has he told you? Your boyfriend Mark Sanchez? I'm just guessing that it's him. Is it him?" DeGeneres asked.
No response. Kate then asked Ellen if she wants Mark to be her boyfriend, which she point-blank replied, "Yeah... He's cute. Don't you think he's cute?"
Kate finally caved, a little, adding, "Yeah, he is cute," and explained that she met him years ago through her sister that works for the New York Jets.
That was enough for Ellen, who concluded: "She's dating Mark Sanchez." Maybe. But if she isn't, we doubt she'll be alone next Valentine's Day.

'Cougar Town' Premiere: The Gang Sets Jules Up For A Big Surprise (VIDEO)
After a long hiatus, Bill Lawrence's little show that could returned to ABC Tuesday night. The title sequence made it sure that they're not altogether happy it's still called "Cougar Town" (Tue., 8:30 p.m. EST on ABC), but the title is the only thing that wasn't really working. By the end of its second season, "Cougar Town" had settled into a great comedic rhythm, and the long hiatus doesn't appear to have slowed them down at all.
At its heart, this is a show about friends hanging out, only they're not the usual young people in their 20s and 30s. With the exception of Laurie, this gang is in their 40s and 50s. And while early episodes saw Courteney Cox's Jules trying to hook up with younger guys, she's been in a committed relationship with her age appropriate neighbor Grayson for a while now. And in this premiere, they put the final nail in the coffin of that show title.
In an effort to surprise her and give her an unexpected proposal that still lived up to her own high expectations, Grayson egged her into tee-peeing some teen hoodlums' house. In reality, it was a vacant house Jules was selling and the toilet paper was to create a memorable backdrop for his unexpected marriage proposal.
The creators are just happy to be back on the air, and looking forward to the challenges of their new time slot. HuffPost TV critic Mo Ryan is also excited to have the show back, urging people on the fence to give it a shot. Maybe watch it with a glass of wine to feel like a part of the Cul De Sac Crew.
The third season of "Cougar Town" continues Tuesdays at 8:30 p.m. EST on ABC.
