Type 2 Diabetes | Health and Fitness

Not surprisingly, health problems associated with uncontrolled Type 2 diabetes can determine the depression that often accompanies the condition. A study of the relationship between these two health conditions was published in May 2011, in the Indian Journal of Medical Research.

Researchers in the Department of Pharmacy Practice, National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research in Punjab, India studied depression in 300 people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes:

  • 23 per cent were diagnosed with major depression,
  • 18 per cent were diagnosed with moderate depression, and
  • 59 per cent had no clinically diagnosed depression.

It was found depression was associated with:

  • age over 54,
  • abdominal fat,
  • nerve damage,
  • kidney disease,
  • blood vessel disease,
  • diabetic foot disease, and
  • taking more than 4 oral medications each day.

Of the seven factors above, only one, aging, cannot be prevented or treated. Or can it?

In the United States, doctors often note the patient?s age on their medical records and typically record whether the patient appears his or her stated age? or appears older or younger than his or her stated age.

While chronological age cannot be tampered with, effective age often can. If 75 is the average lifespan for a person in a given society, then someone who lives to 100 is effectively only 75. Staying active, not smoking, and eating a healthy diet are all things that lower our effective age.

Abdominal fat interferes with controlling Type 2 diabetes and makes people tired and self-conscious about their appearances. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, USA, recommends:

  • abdominal curls for strengthening abdominal muscles, and
  • eating a diet rich in fiber and low in calories can be helpful also.

So, one of the steps to remove abdominal fat is to eat lots of fruit and vegetables.

Peripheral nerve damage makes for pain and numbness in the feet and hands, and can make walking and manual activities dangerous and frustrating. Keeping your blood sugar levels under control and in the range suggested by your doctor, and taking a walk daily, can help prevent and treat the nerve damage that can come with uncontrolled diabetes.

Kidney disease can be a serious complication of diabetes, so, again, keep your blood sugar under control so that the blood vessels going through the kidneys are not damaged. Blood pressure is important to keep under control as well, so visit your doctor for regular checkups and be faithful taking any blood pressure medication that is prescribed for you.

Heart and blood vessel diseases are other serious complication that can be prevented and treated with a light diet and physical exercise. Eat a salad for lunch instead of the hamburger and fries and follow with a walk in the park. Even a brisk walk for 10 minutes will help lower your blood sugar.

To prevent diabetic foot disease, again, go for a walk every day as well as following a sensible plan for keeping your blood sugar under control.

Trying to fit four or more pills a day into a schedule is not easy, and being reminded even more than four times a day of having diabetes is no fun either. Discuss with your doctor how to avoid having that many pills to take, or, if you already take that many, discuss a plan for controlling your Type 2 diabetes well enough on diet and exercise to be able to cut down on medications.
