The Republican's tornado coverage awarded top prize by New England Associated Press News Executives Association

The New England Associated Press News Executives Association has given the staff of The Republican first place awards in its class for its written deadline news coverage as well as for photographs for the newspaper?s work on the June 1, 2011 tornado that swept the region.

A judge called the staff?s written work ?comprehensive storm coverage under trying conditions.? The staff?s efforts in the photo story category were hailed with the comments, ?This reportage portrayed all the best aspects of storytelling through photographs. A great effort executed with style and passion. Bravo!?

In addition, The Republican?s Ron Chimelis took a second place in the sports column category for his work on ?Coach?s influence ran deep,? ?Pay up and shut up, Kobe? and ?Paterno made final mistake.? Chimelis? work was praised with the comments ?very nice writing style, great storytelling, compelling angles.?

?The two first place awards for our coverage of the June 1 tornado were especially satisfying since the effort encompassed the entire editorial staff,? Wayne E. Phaneuf, The Republican?s executive editor, said.

?In many places without power or phone service we were the only link to the news. And of course, Ron Chimelis? award for sports columns is another in a long line of accolades for a fantastic writer who I think is one of the best sports columnist there is.?

The newspaper?s awards were for publications in the class I category, which is for newspapers with circulations of 40,000 or more.

The association pointed to the June 2 front page headline ?State of Emergency? over a story headlined ?Two die as tornadoes hit area? in awarding the first place honor for deadline coverage.

The story by Jack Flynn and Jeanette DeForge begins with ?Two tornadoes ripped through Greater Springfield Wednesday, killing two, injuring dozens and carving a corridor of destruction from Westfield to Sturbridge.?

It continues with ?In the region?s worst tornado outbreak in a century, 10 communities were battered by back-to-back storms that inflicted widespread damage and left 57,000 homes without power Wednesday night.?
